Novi Civic Center Sensory Inclusion Certified

Guests with sensory needs who visit the Novi Civic Center for a program or event can now be assured their experience will be a positive one. Recently, the Novi Civic Center received Sensory Inclusion Certification from KultureCity, which means staff has been trained to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation.

Sensory bags, equipped with noise cancelling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads also are available to guests who may feel overwhelmed by the environment. Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity app to learn what sensory features are available and where they can access them.

CAPRACAPRA Award

In October 2016, the City of Novi’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Department joined the ranks of elite park and recreation agencies across the country by earning accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). In September 2021, PRCS was awarded re-accreditation during the 2021 NRPA Annual Conference.

CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies, and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management and service to the community. This mark of distinction indicates that an agency has met rigorous standards related to the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety and services.

As part of the accreditation process, PRCS had to demonstrate compliance with 154 recognized standards and document all policies and procedures. Often the process helps identify efficiencies and heighten areas of accountability, all of which translate into higher quality service and operation to benefit the community. The accreditation places Novi PRCS as one of three accredited agencies in Michigan and one of 180 in the U.S. out of about 10,000 possible.
