Yard waste is collected once per week from the first Monday in April through the second week of December on your regular trash collection day.

Yard waste includes plant material such as leaves, grass clippings, weeds, plant trimmings, small shrubs, bush trimmings, twigs, and pine needles

Yard waste does not include soil, rocks or stones, sod, root balls, any garbage, food, plastic, synthetic fibers, human or animal waste, or branches larger than 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length.

PREPARING YARD WASTE FOR COLLECTION

Place yard waste into a paper yard waste bag or reusable container no larger than 35 gallons. Yard waste placed in plastic bags will be left uncollected.

Following these guidelines helps ensure safe and efficient service:

Yard Waste Bags

  • Bags should be neatly organized at the curb.
  • Bags should be securely folded or rolled closed.

Branches

Branches must be smaller than 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length. All branches must be bundled using string. Bundles cannot exceed 18 inches in diameter and cannot weigh more than 60 pounds.

  • Containers should be neatly organized at the curb.
  • Containers must be clearly marked as “Yard Waste” or “Compost”.

Free, self-adhesive yard waste stickers can be obtained from the Novi Department of Public Works or the Novi Civic Center.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING LEAF SEASON

Each fall, yard waste volumes increase substantially as leaves, garden debris, and seasonal cleanup materials are placed at the curb. To maintain reliable service throughout the season:

  • Trash collection will remain the top priority.
  • Yard waste service may extend beyond its regularly scheduled collection day.
  • Collection crews may work weekends to complete outstanding yard waste routes.
  • Residents should continue placing yard waste out on their normal collection day.

Please allow Priority Waste crews time to complete delayed routes before reporting a missed yard waste collection. In most cases, delayed collections will be completed through the weekend. If your yard waste remains uncollected by the following week, please contact Priority Waste for assistance.

Why is yard waste only picked up during certain times of the year?

Michigan law prohibits yard waste from being disposed of in a landfill, and the composting site where Priority Waste takes yard waste is not open during the winter months.
