Novi is committed to preserving the natural resources that make our community a beautiful, healthy, and vibrant place to live, work, and do business. The protection of wetlands, woodlands, water features, and open spaces helps sustain native species, support ecological systems, and maintain the air and water quality essential to our well-being. These natural features not only enhance our quality of life but also provide long-term environmental and economic benefits. In addition to conserving existing natural areas, the City of Novi completes yearly plantings of trees throughout the community to expand and strengthen its urban forest.
Tree canopy is another vital part of Novi’s natural infrastructure. Trees improve our environment by absorbing stormwater, filtering air pollutants, capturing carbon, and cooling the city. They also enhance neighborhoods, parks, and business areas by adding beauty, shade, and walkability. Currently, 37% of Novi is shaded by tree canopy, providing residents with an estimated $14.4 million in annual benefits.
Novi contains:
- 4,872 acres of woodlands (24% of total area)
- 2,802 acres of wetlands (14% of total area)
- 7,426 acres of tress including 40,557 street trees
- Two-thirds of Walled Lake
Novi also remains committed to sustainable waste management through strong residential recycling efforts. In 2024, Novi recycled 4,094 tons of materials, achieving a residential recycling rate of 33.6%, compared to the Michigan average of 23%. While maintaining this higher recycling rate, Novi’s per capita spending on recycling is roughly one-third of the Southeast Michigan average.
