With voter approval of the bond, Novi is now moving forward with replacing outdated public safety facilities that no longer meet the needs of a growing, modern community. Since the Police Station and Fire Stations #1, #2, and #3 were built between 1978 and 1981, Novi’s population has more than tripled—and is projected to exceed 74,000 by 2050.
The growth in demand for police and fire services has made it clear that larger, more flexible, and purpose-built facilities are necessary. The existing buildings are undersized, inefficiently configured, and not designed for today’s co-ed workforce, which creates operational challenges.
While renovation was considered, the steel and concrete structural walls used in the original construction made retrofitting prohibitively expensive and impractical. After thorough evaluation, City Council determined that new facilities would best support Novi’s public safety personnel, providing the space, tools, and resources needed to continue delivering high-quality service to the community for decades to come.
PUBLIC SAFETY HEADQUARTERS LOCATION AND EXPANSION OF LEE BEGOLE DRIVE
Thanks to the support of Novi voters, the approved bond will fund the construction of a modern, centralized Public Safety Headquarters, co-locating the Novi Police Department and Fire Station #1. This investment will enhance efficiency, collaboration, and emergency response capabilities across the community.
Co-Location:
With police and fire services under one roof, communication and coordination between departments will be significantly improved. This shared facility will allow first responders to mobilize more quickly—especially during critical incidents—and will include state-of-the-art technology, advanced training areas, and improved working conditions for all public safety personnel.
Maintaining and Enhancing Response Times:
As part of this project, Lee BeGole Drive will be extended to connect Crescent Boulevard south to Grand River Avenue. This new connection will create a direct and efficient route for emergency vehicles, reducing delays caused by traffic congestion or limited access points, and helping ensure that response times remain efficient and reliable.
With the successful passage of the bond proposal, Novi will move forward with critical improvements to its public safety infrastructure — all while continuing to maintain one of the lowest millage rates in Oakland County, even with the approved 1-mill increase.
The approved bond will fund:
✔ Modern public safety buildings with updated layouts and equipment access, thoughtfully designed to support efficient emergency response times.
✔ Facilities built to meet today’s safety, health, and operational standards for first responders.
✔ New spaces dedicated to public safety programs, community education, and outreach, further strengthening the connection between residents and first responders.
✔ Cost savings by avoiding recurring expenses for repairs and temporary fixes to aging and inadequate facilities.
