Public Safety Employee of the Month - Patrol Officer Matthew Chylaszek

I wish to extend my appreciation and congratulations to you on your nomination and selection as the Novi Public Safety Employee of the Month – September 2018.  You were nominated by Detective Sergeant Kevin Gilmore, Officers Johnson and Bidus, and Sergeant Amanda Kulikowski. You were selected by the Public Safety Innovation Committee for your keen observations, comprehensive roadside investigation techniques, and exhaustive, relentless surveillance from a traffic stop you conducted in the area of Eight Mile Road and Orchard Hill Place.
On September 19, 2018 at approximately 1:30 a.m., you were on patrol in the area of Orchard Hill Place and Haggerty when you observed a suspicious Nissan sedan driving in the area.  You followed the vehicle southbound on Haggerty Road then westbound onto Eight Mile Road before conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle as it turned onto Orchard Hill Place for a second time.  You were able to identify the driver of the rental vehicle and ask pertinent questions including why the driver was in the area.  Due to the suspiciousness of the driver’s activities, driving around a closed business area, you continued to conduct surveillance on the vehicle and driver even after the traffic stop was concluded.  Later on that same morning, Officer Hailey Penzak was dispatched to the Best Buy on Haggerty Road; a burglary was discovered where the suspect entered the business through the roof of the building.  After your shift concluded, you contacted the shift sergeant as well as Officer Hailey Penzak to pass along the valuable information you obtained through your traffic stop and subsequent surveillance.  Because of your determination and diligent police work, the information you provided assisted Officer Penzak with obtaining surveillance photos of the suspects, leading to the identification of one possible suspect.  As a result of your police instincts, two suspects were arrested while committing another breaking and entering.  It was later learned that the two suspects were also responsible for eight previous breaking and entering complaints in Michigan and Ohio.
You enhance the image of the Novi Police Department and exemplify the professionalism of the Police and Fire Team.  Your attention to detail and hard work ethic assisted in the apprehension of the two multi-state criminals.   The full-time fire and police command officers and administrators congratulate you on being named Public Safety Employee of the Month – September, 2018.
