Auxiliary Firefighter Scott Discher
The Novi Public Safety Administration would like to extend their appreciation and congratulations to Auxiliary Firefighter Scott Discher on his nomination and selection as the Novi Public Safety Employee of the Month – March 2017. Auxiliary Firefighter Discher was nominated by Captain Mark Theisen and selected by the Implementation Committee for his professionalism and calm demeanor during a traumatic incident.
On March 18, 2017, Novi Fire Personnel responded to victims trapped on Shawood Lake. Fire crews arrived to find a man and his dog stuck in a kayak, surrounded by icy water, approximately 100 yards from the shoreline. After the 27 year old male saw his dog fall through the ice, he ran out of his house to rescue his companion wearing only a t-shirt and sweatpants. After pulling the dog out of the water and into the kayak, the owner became surrounded by ice and was unable to use his paddles. Wet, cold, and exhausted the man was struggling and could not return to shore. Without hesitation, Auxiliary Firefighter Discher suited up in the cold water rescue gear and headed onto the ice. As he made your way toward the victim, Auxiliary Firefighter Discher continued to reassure him that he would be safe, dry, and warm as quickly as possible. When Auxiliary Firefighter Discher reached the victim, he placed a life vest on him, attached the kayak to the rescue harness, and stayed near while the victim and his dog were quickly pulled to safety.
Throughout the incident, Auxiliary Firefighter Discher remained level headed, collected, and used his extensive training to ensure a safe outcome for a Novi resident in distress. The man initially displayed symptoms of hypothermia but was cleared medically by Auxiliary Firefighter Discher and other firefighters after a short period of time. Auxiliary Firefighter Discher is commended for his bravery, quick actions, and calm demeanor in this stressful situation.
