The Novi Public Safety Administration would like to extend out congratulations to Detective Kristie Gruenwald on being nominated and selected as the Public Safety Employee of the Month for September, 2017. Detective Grunewald was nominated for her relentless follow-up on a bomb threat, which resulted in the identification and subsequent confession by the suspect.

On September 21, 2016, at approximately 0800 hours, officers were dispatched to Brass Craft on a potential bomb threat.  Employees located a note near the community bulletin board that read “bomb in building”.  All 130 on site employees were evacuated from the building and two police K9’s were called in who swept the building for explosives over the following three hours.  Detectives were then requested to respond to assist with the investigation.  Detective Gruenwald was the Officer In Charge (OIC) of the follow up investigation and learned of the vast numbers of employees on scene that could all be potential suspects.  Detective Gruenwald then proceeded to create an 8 page LSI scientific content analysis scan questionnaire which was disseminated to all employees to fill out the day of the event.  After detectives cleared the scene, another note was found near the employee bathroom that read “boom”, and the building was evacuated and swept by police K9’s once again.  Detective Balog and Detective Gruenwald then methodically examined all questionnaires the following day and had one person respond to our station for an interview at 0830 hours on September 23rd.

After a 3 hour interview, the female suspect fully confessed to the threats to Detective Gruenwald and Detective Balog.  The suspect could not explain why she did it other than it was a rush for her to see the panic and chaos it caused.   All involved with the follow up on this did a remarkable job with an unprecedented amount of potential suspects. The incident has been submitted for review by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for any potential charges. Detective Gruenwald systematically processed and investigated a scene that resulted in a confession from someone two days after the initial report involving over 100 potential suspects.  Detective Gruenwald’s diligent work should be a model for other employees with their investigations.  An additional drain on police resources, not only from our agency but surrounding, and heightened citizen fear was minimized as a result of Detective Gruenwald’s direct involvement.
