November 2015 - Detective Michael Bender
Detective Michael Bender
The Novi Public Safety Administration would like to extend their appreciation and congratulations Detective Michael Bender on his nomination and selection as the Novi Public Safety Employee of the month, November 2015. Detective Bender was nominated by Detective Sergeant Baetens and overwhelmingly selected by the Implementation Committee for his initiative, diligence and relentless follow up and assessment of a reported Criminal Sexual Conduct complaint.
In December of 2014, Detective Bender received notification from the Wayne County Department of Human Services (DHS) regarding potential crimes which may have occurred at a Novi residence. The victim in the alleged incident was a juvenile and the offender an adult. Detective Bender immediately launched a comprehensive eleven month investigation during which he discovered additional crimes and victims. After presenting the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, they charged the suspect with one-count of Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) 1st Degree, two-counts of CSC 2nd Degree and one-count of Aggravated Indecent Exposure. On November 4, 2015, a jury found the suspect guilty on all charges. In an effort to recognize the victim’s courage for testifying during the trial, Detective Bender arranged a station tour for the young man and his mother during which time you issued him a “Junior Police” badge.
Because of Detective Bender’s in-depth investigation, a child predator is facing 25 years in prison and has been deprived the opportunity to further prey on our youngest, and most precious community members. In addition to his efforts recognizing and honoring the victims bravery, Detective Bender went above and beyond to assist in the healing process for the boy and his family. We would like to once again extend our thanks to Detective Bender for his exemplary performance.
