Transportation Services

 Senior Transportation Booklet

The City of Novi’s Senior Transportation program provides specialized transportation to residents of Novi age 55 or over, or physically challenged non-seniors, who cannot access a regular car or cab. The service cannot accommodate children passengers. Vehicles are scheduled based on the needs of each passenger using either a lift-equipped bus or standard car.

In addition to the Senior Transportation program, the City of Novi subsidizes cab rides to residents of Novi age 55 or over, or physically challenged non-seniors for rides within the City of Novi. Cab rides are provided by Community Cab Co.

SERVICE HOURS:
Cab rides are available 7 days per week.

DESTINATIONS/ FARE STRUCTURE:
Passengers pay $4 for a one-way ride within the City limits. Passengers may travel outside the city, however, regular cab fares will apply.

HOW TO ARRANGE TRANSPORTATION:
First contact the Novi Senior Center to obtain a cab card. You may call 248-347-0414 or stop by the Senior Center, 25075 Meadowbrook Road (between Ten Mile and Grand River Roads). After you receive your cab card, call Community Cab at 248-349-8118 to schedule your ride. Cab rides should be cancelled by calling Community Cab 248-349-8118.

Service Hours

  • M/W/F -  8:00am - 9:00pm

  • T/Th -  8:00am - 4:00pm

  • Sat -  9:00am - 2:00pm

  • No transportation will be provided on legal holidays, when City services are closed.

  • Transportation service is cancelled whenever Novi Schools close due to snow/ice/temperature. Please watch for notification on television or radio. Scheduled passengers will be informed as soon as possible. Call transportation if in doubt.

Destinations

• Transportation is provided to the Novi Civic Center and Senior Center location for events/programs at no cost.

• Transportation may also be provided to doctor appointments, shopping etc., and may travel up to 10 miles outside the City of Novi for medical appointments only (exception: Providence Hospital in Southfield).

Passenger Responsibilities

  • KEEP IN MIND, WE NEED THE FLEXIBILITY TO BE 15 MINUTES EARLY OR LATE. Schedule your appointment with this possibility in mind.

  • Passengers MUST ALWAYS wear a seat belt.

  • STATE LAW REQUIRES all passengers to remain seated until the vehicle has come to a complete stop and the driver has opened the door.

  • Passengers may not smoke in the vehicle.

  • If you need assistance from your door to the vehicle, please notify the Transportation Scheduler when making your reservation.

  • The driver is prohibited from coming into your home or taking you into your appointment.

  • You may have an escort/caregiver ride with you for assistance, free of charge. • Drivers cannot make unscheduled stops or schedule rides.

  • The drivers are only responsible for your transportation. They are not able to provide any other services such as banking, grocery pick-ups, snow removal, mail pick-up, garbage cans, quick household chores, etc.

  • Unruly, belligerent, inappropriate language, constant cancellations and being late for scheduled pick-up time may result in removal from the service.

  • Passengers pay their fee to the driver. Drivers cannot accept tips, but you are welcome to make a donation to the transportation program.

  • Drivers may assist with a few small packages/bags, they are not to make numerous trips back and forth. If you have more or heavy items you will need to have a cart. Drivers cannot bring your items into your home.

  • No children or pets are allowed in vehicles.

Senior VanFare Structure

  • Fee is $2 per one-way ride within the City limits.

  • Fee is $4 per one-way ride outside the City limits (medical appointments only). PUNCH CARDS:

  • For your convenience, we offer pre-paid punch cards. The cards are used in place of cash.

  • The cost of each card is $20. You can purchase a punch card at the Novi Senior Center or from a driver on your next scheduled trip.

  • Punch cards cannot be replaced if lost.

How to Schedule Transportation

  • All passengers are scheduled through the Transportation Scheduler, located in the Novi Senior Center.

  • Call 248-735-5617 between 8:00am and 2:00pm, Monday through Friday. Remember, reservations must be made at least 2 days in advance by 2:00pm.

  • NOTE: Monday appointments must be made no later than 2:00pm the Thursday prior and Tuesday appointments must be made no later than 2:00pm the Friday prior.

  • If you have a schedule of many trips per month or the same trip on various days in the month, you may give the Transportation Scheduler a copy of those trips. The dates will be recorded and a ride will be provided on those days, without you having to call.

  • If you are going to therapy, or other programs on a monthly basis, it is your responsibility to let the Transportation Scheduler know before the end of the month if you are continuing into the next month.

  • If you need to change or cancel your ride, let us know as soon as possible.

  • If the Transportation Scheduler is away from the office when calling for a reservation, leave your name, phone number and brief message on the recorder and your call will be returned as soon as possible.

  • If you have a need for a special vehicle and are in a wheelchair and need the lift, let the Transportation Scheduler know when making your reservation. You must be able to leave your home on your own without assistance.

  • Driver is prohibited from coming into your home or taking you into your appointment. Please tell us if you will have an escort/caregiver riding with you (escort/caregiver rides free).

When calling to make a reservation, you must give the following information for our confidential records.

  • Name, Address & Phone Number.

  • Disability, if any.

  • Destination with address, suite #, appointment time, doctors name and telephone number.

  • Emergency contact name & phone number.

Failure to do this may result in discontinued use of the service.
