Road Construction
See list of construction projects
listed below.
March 23, 2012The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects to begin work on the resurfacing of Grand River Avenue from just east of Novi Road to Haggerty Road in Novi this Monday, March 26, weather permitting. Work had previously been expected to start last Monday, March 19, but the start was delayed by a week. Once work begins, the road will remain open in both directions throughout the project, but motorists should expect delays, especially during rush hours. The project includes base repair and the application of four inches of new asphalt to the road. Safety improvements are also part of the project, including the addition or extension of right-turn lanes at several location, the addition of three-foot paved shoulders and the reconstruction of pedestrian crosswalks to comply with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Concrete curbs and gutters will be added where needed to ensure proper drainage. The work is expected to be completed by mid-September. The work will be performed by Cadillac Asphalt of Clarkston. The total project cost is expected to be approximately $4.1 million. Of that, just over $3.3 million is being paid for with federal funds. RCOC is contributing $464,000, while the city is adding $272,000 and Oakland County General Government (through the Tri-Party Program) is putting in $64,000.
2011 Season Ending Update - November 28, 2011NOVI ROAD LINK PROJECT UPDATEThe Novi Road "Link" is now open. Please bear in mind that the contractor will continue to close lanes along the project, as necessary to complete various construction related items throughout the winter. The roadway will be open to two-way traffic at all times, but motorists should still obey all construction traffic control devices and be cautious of workers being present. GRAND RIVER RE-SURFACING PROJECTAll of the work on this project associated with this year has been completed. The temporary milling and paving of large sections on Grand River Avenue (between Novi Road and Meadowbrook) are now complete, as well as the seven (7) hydrant relocations. This project is now considered in “seasonal shutdown” until April 15, 2012. For more information about the Grand River Re-Surfacing Project, visit www.rcocweb.org or contact the Department of Customer Services at (877) 858-4804. NINE Mile Pathway (Meadowbrook to Haggerty Roads)This project consists of the construction of a new six (6) foot wide concrete sidewalk; drainage improvements; ADA sidewalk ramp upgrades; and pedestrian signal installations along the north-side of Nine Mile Road, between Meadowbrook and Haggerty Roads. The pathway has been completely installed and restored. Only some minor work remains for the pedestrian signals at the intersection of 9 Mile and Haggerty Roads. This work is expected to be completed by early March 2012.
History of the Grand River Avenue Resurfacing ProjectFebruary 24, 2011 - Funding for the resurfacing of Grand River Avenue between Novi Road and Haggerty Road in late summer/early fall 2011 was considered by the Oakland County Federal Aid Committee for Road Funding at its February 22, 2011 meeting. This project was originally scheduled for 2012 and has been pulled ahead.

I-96 Transportation StudyThe Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is conducting a survey regarding the I-96 Corridor Study that is being co-sponsored by the City of Novi. This project includes a major land use and transportation study of the greater I-96 corridor from I-275 to Wixom Road bounded by Twelve Mile Road and Grand River Avenue. The project will incorporate cooperative efforts with MDOT, RCOC, and the City of Wixom while taking advantage of major private investment relationships with Providence Hospital, Twelve Oaks Mall, Suburban Collection Showplace and others. The study will address road access, beautification and widening improvements for traffic safety and economic development. The corridor is high value to the region and the City of Novi. MDOT has high interest because of the volume and congestion on the freeway (average daily traffic counts of 132,300 on I-96 east and westbound). For the City of Novi, the corridor represents the main thoroughfares of Grand River Avenue, I-96, and Twelve Mile Road which residents and commerce rely upon daily and which are all in need of upgrades. By carefully studying this key area of the community, the City’s future is better planned for, via the Master Plan for Land Use, the Capital Improvement Plan, and other tools used to forecast and guide future development. The study's final report will be submitted to the City of Novi in December 2010. Click here to take the Online Transportation Survey.
These dates and projects are all tentative depending upon many variables including weather, funding etc.
