The General Services Division of the Novi
Police Department consists of the Investigations Section and the
Records Section.

It is the responsibility of the Investigation
Section to investigate all crimes and gather all evidence related to
those crimes. Upon completing their investigations the
Detectives are required to submit all findings to the Oakland County
Prosecutor’s office, or the Novi City Prosecutor’s Office for formal
criminal charges. There are several specialty areas within the
Investigation Section that are vital to its success. A Juvenile
Detective is responsible for investigating all crimes related to
juveniles as well as developing partnerships with several community
groups that work with the children in and around Novi. A Court
Services Detective is responsible for dealing with all court
proceedings, prisoners and maintaining the department’s property
room. A School Resource Officer is assigned to the Novi High School
and is responsible for a variety of activities that take place in
that facility. The SRO not only investigates criminal activity but
serves as a liaison between the PD and the school as well as several
other entities within the city.
The success of any police department is
directly related to the level of training that department gets. The
Detective Sergeant is directly responsible for the in-service
training that each member gets. He is assisted by one of the
Detectives to ensure the best training available is provided. There
are several training topics that are required to be updated
annually, or bi-annually such as Defensive Driving, CPR, Blood Born
Pathogens and Firearms Qualifications to name a few. Additional
areas of training are provided to help our officers grow and develop
areas of specialty.
There are two detectives that are assigned to
Crime Prevention and DARE. DARE is currently being taught not only
in the Upper Elementary School but also in the Middle School and
High School. It is also taught in the Walled Lake and Northville
Elementary Schools that are in the city of Novi. As Crime Prevention
Officers these same two detectives are responsible for a variety of
activities. They are available to all organizations to put on crime
prevention programs for all groups from pre-school kids to all our
senior citizens. Some of the programs they have established over
the years include:
The objective is to work proactively to prevent
crime and improve the quality of life for all Novi Residents and
businesses.
Two Detectives from the Investigation Section
are assigned to SONIC. (South Oakland Narcotics/Intelligence
Consortium) SONIC is an interdepartmental consortium which strives
to help eliminate the use and sale of illegal narcotics. Another
component of the SONIC unit is to locate and eliminate in progress
crimes. This is done by using a variety of surveillance methods.
SONIC has been responsible for hundreds of
narcotics arrests and thousands of dollars worth of drug money being
forfeited.
A third Detective is assigned to the DEA (Drug
Enforcement Administration) They work as a team much the way SONIC
operates however they have all the Federal resources available to
them on a much larger geographical scale. This position is funded on
a limited basis by DEA.

Records Section
-
Records Manager - 1
-
Clerks - 7
The Records Manager is responsible for the day
to day operations of the section along with being in charge of the
Police Information System. This includes all computer related
systems within the department and those that interact with systems
outside the department. Statistical information is constantly being
shared and recorded not only with the State of Michigan but also the
Federal Government. The records section includes two clerks assigned
as court services specialists. They are responsible to make sure all
warrants, citations and reports are in order and forwarded to the
courts. Other clerks handle records functions that include Sex
Offender Registration, False Alarm Management, Department Video Tape
Management and Traffic/Commercial Motor Vehicle Citation entry to
name a few. A Novi Police Department Records Clerk is typically the
first employee seen when someone enters the department. Customer
Service is the constant goal of each member of the records section.
