Coaching Tips
Give mom or dad a glove or bat, too! If
you are coaching youth baseball or softball this spring or summer,
keep in mind that the moms and dads of your players can be much more
than chauffeurs for their kids' games and practices. All it takes is
a little creativity on your part to include them in your sessions.
You can involve as many interested parents as you want in your
practices and here are some ways you can pull it off:
Pair kids and parents in drills: You
can liven up a routine drill with the help of the parents. For
example, you can put a parent on the base paths, and you can have
the players run through a rundown situation (where the base runner
is caught between bases with no safe place to turn). The kids will
love the challenge of trying to tag a mom or dad out.
Set up a parent-child scrimmage: The
kids will really love seeing their moms at bat, their dads running
the bases, and their friends' parents chasing down balls in the
outfield. You can play an inning or two at the end of practice to
conclude the day on a fun note, or you can devote a mid-season
practice to the scrimmage as a nice break from the routine.
