PEN PALS

The Pen Pal Program is presented in partnership with Novi Community School District. For the past 15 years it has provided 1st and 2nd graders an opportunity to write to a Pen Pal for the full school year and meet at a lunch in May. It is a great way to connect with children right here in Novi and provide children a real-life lesson in Social Studies, Language Arts, Geography and more. We are seeking older adults to be Pen Pals with elementary school children for the upcoming school year, contact the Novi Senior Center at 248.347.0414 for more information.

 

SECOND ANNUAL FABULOUS 50’S EXTRAVAGANZA!!!

Presented in partnership with White Lake (Dublin), Highland, Milford, Northfield, South Lyon and Wixom Senior Centers. WPON AM 1460 DJ Jimmy James will be playing music from the fifties for your listening and dancing pleasure. Dinner included, along with some fun mini contests like hula

NOVI HEALTH FAIR “HEALTHY BY CHOICE”

Novi Senior Services department is seeking area health care providers to host booths at the Fair. The reservation fee is $50. Each booth consists of a 6’ table and two chairs. The reservation deadline is September 22, 2010.

Join us for our third annual Novi Health Fair – “Healthy By Choice.” Get all the health related information you need from area health care providers to be “healthy by choice.” The fair features 40+ booths hosted by informational exhibitors as well as free health screening and free informational workshops. Flu shots will be available for adults and children and given on a first come, first serve basis. Flu Shot price is $25 without insurance or free with Medicare Part B, Medicare Advantage, Blue Care Network, HAP, Priority Plus and Health Care Plus. Healthy refreshments will be provided. This program is proudly presented in partnership with Heartland HomeCare Centers and Hear Clear.

“NOVI NEEDLERS” QUILTING GROUP

Give back to the community by joining sewers and non-sewers who create beautiful quilts to be donated to various agencies such as First Step, Catholic Social Services, Denby House and the Salvation Army. Novi Needlers meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Fabric donations welcome, 100% cotton only. Over 282 quilts donated in 2009.

ZUMBA GOLD (CARDIO)

The South American dance is cropping up everywhere and with good reason – it is an innovative, fun and exciting program. Designed for the active older adult; the true beginner, those who are not used to exercising, or limited physically. The difference between a Zumba Basic and Gold is that Gold is a lower intensity, not as fast, but it certainly is as fun. Minimum 10.

Feeling a little behind in the crazy world of TECHNOLOGY? Come to a class that is geared towards adults age 50+ to discuss how e-mail, internet and other software can help you more effectively and efficiently do what you want to do. No computer experience is necessary, but all abilities are welcome. Come and learn about communicating with your family and friends by e-mail, video chat (Skype), texting and Facebook, digital pictures; options for downloading, printing, sharing, what is an iPod and iTunes, and wireless “hotspots”, what are they and how you can use them. Small class sizes ensure individual attention. Start with Computer Fundamentals and soon, you’ll be computer savvy. Minimum of 5 participants required.

Become familiar with basic computer terms and functions. Learn the very basics about the hardware. Explore the software that is most commonly found on basic PC’s as well as understand the desktop and basic MS Windows applications. No previous computer experience required.

Learn how to recognize and avoid identity theft, how thieves steal and what they do with your identity, how to protect yourself and what to do if you become a victim. The Senior Brigade initiative is designed to assist seniors with financial and health care decisions and protect them against scam artists and other predators. ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP

Has Alzheimer’s affected someone in your life? Support Groups provide an opportunity for family members, friends, caregivers and other interested individuals to meet regularly for mutual emotional support. This group is a safe place to exchange coping skills with one another in matters relating to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP – “OPENING NEW DOORS”

Loss is a natural part of life. Loss and grief is often accompanied with intense emotions, stress and change. Dr. Michael Meyer’s presentation may offer comfort and help to facilitate growth that assists adjustment to life after loss. We’ll also discuss healthy ways to mourn, find support and hope. This program is proudly presented in partnership with O’Brien Sullivan Funeral Home.

CELL PHONES

Increase your safety and security. Free used cell phones are available for senior citizens. Phones have been deactivated but 911 calls may still be made if the call is made in an area that has cell phone service. The phone may be used in an emergency, while traveling or during a phone service disruption at home. For more information call 248.347.0414. We are currently only accepting cell phone donations with car chargers.

TEFAP - THE EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Emergency Food Assistance Program provides quarterly food for seniors who are income eligible - 1 person household $1,307 or less monthly and 2 person household $1,760 or less monthly. You must pre-register. For more information contact Jan McAlpine at 248.347.0421.

FOCUS HOPE

Focus Hope Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides free monthly food to those who are 60 years of age or older and reside in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw or Macomb counties. Income Eligibility: 1 person household $1,174 or less monthly and 2 person household $1,579 or less monthly. Commodity food programs allow you to lead a better quality of life. You must pre-register. TRANSPORTATION

The program provides a safe and secure mode of travel for you, allowing you to continue a healthy, active lifestyle. Novi residents age 55 and older and those with disabilities are eligible for this program. Transportation is available for medical appointments, shopping and trips to the center. An appointment is required. Remember the earlier you call for an appointment, the better your chance of getting the time you request. You can even schedule 1 year in advance. To schedule your appointment, call 248.735.5617 between 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri. Closed Sep 6, Nov 11, 25, 26, Dec 23, 24, 25, 30, 31. You can make appointments anytime day or night from your computer. Expanded on-demand Van Transportation will be available until 9pm Monday-Friday, and 5pm on Saturday for employment or medical appointments only that can not be made during regular transportation hours. Advance reservation of 72 hours is required for transports during the expanded hours of service. No rides will be available on Sundays, after 9pm on weekdays or 5pm on Saturdays.

Price: $4 one-way within City of Novi boundaries
          $6 one-way outside City of Novi boundaries for
               medical appointments only
          $1 per one-way ride to the Novi Civic Center,
               Novi Senior Center, Novi Public Library or to a
               Novi Senior Center special event/program
               within the city limits.

 

Transportation Punch Cards – Your Best Bet !

No need to carry cash! Purchase a pre-paid transportation punch card. This is a great gift idea for a family member or friend. You may purchase punch cards at the Novi Senior Center or with a transportation driver on your next trip. Punch cards are non-refundable. For further information please call 248.735.5617.

The Loan Closet, located in the Novi Senior Center, has home medical equipment and supplies available to local seniors that are in need. Items on hand change constantly, so it’s important you call ahead to make an appointment. We also accept items to be placed in the Loan Closet - must be clean and in good shape. Day and Extended Trips

Stop by the Novi Senior Center to pick up flyers on the 60+ day and extended trips we offer. Register for all trips at the Novi Senior Center. Make checks payable to travel company offering the trip. Sorry, NO cash. Most trips depart from the Novi Civic Center parking lot. Tour companies require a minimum of ten (10) passengers in order to pick up at our location. Please arrive a minimum of 20 minutes prior to departure and park your vehicle in the rear of the parking lot closest to the tennis courts in order to reserve “up close” parking for persons doing short term business with the City.
