Super Saturday - Polish Festival

Strike up the Polka band and enjoy some of the most famous comfort food dishes in the world; kielbasa, stuffed cabbage and pierogi! A great way to enjoy the evening with toe-tapping music by the Kielbasa Kings and a great meal and gracious Polish hospitality!

Get out those red hats and join our group here at the Novi Senior Center. A great way to meet new people and celebrate who you are and what you can be! This is a fun loving group of ladies who like to celebrate their age by wearing red hats and purple clothing. The group decides what activities they would like to participate in: lunches, movies and special events, all in a group and all wearing red hats. Age 50+. NEW- Men ’s Breakfast Bunch

The New Men’s Club will meet at the Novi Senior Center for breakfast monthly and drive to a restaurant location. Restaurant location will change each month, and locations will be posted at the Senior Center front desk. Come join the guys for comradely and good food. Restaurant charges as applicable. You may drive directly to the restaurant or use our transportation for $3 each way. Some of the places we will visit are Big Boy, Denny’s, Moe’s on Ten and Coney Island. “Novi Needlers” Quilting Group

Give back to the community by joining sewers and non-sewers who create beautiful quilts to be donated to various agencies such as First Step, Catholic Social Services, Denby House and the Salvation Army. Novi Needlers meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Fabric donations welcome, 100% cotton only. Over 122 quilts donated in 2008.

Polls show that 85% of the adult population prefers to remain in their home after retirement. The National Home Builders Association along with AARP have created a set of guidelines that assist with the safe transition and identify the needs of the aging in place generation. Arthritis Foundation Self -Help Program (AFSHP)

The Arthritis Foundation Self-Help Program is a group health education program designed specifically for people with arthritis and related diseases. AFSHP course cover segments in disease-specific information, stress management strategies, medication use, exercise alternatives and coping techniques. Participants may use The Arthritis Helpbook as a textbook for the course. Books are available for purchase at a cost of $20. The course format encourages active participation and includes lecture, discussion and group activities. Participants in the course can enjoy these significant long-term benefits: Improved knowledge about arthritis and its management. A reduced level of pain. Fewer physician visits. Increased frequency of self-care behaviors such as exercise and relaxation techniques. A heightened belief in self-help strategies for arthritis. Total Body Sculpt (Strength Training )

Build lean muscle mass in all the major muscles of the body with the use of hand held weights. We begin by warming up to work the upper and lower body and then target the abs. You will increase your metabolism with this intense muscle building workout. Through a repetition of different exercises you will increase muscle mass and improve body density to prevent osteoporosis. All levels welcome, beginners can use no weights and work their way up to increasing weights and intensity. Must have a minimum of 8 participants. Zumba Gold

Zumba Gold is a Latin inspired way to get fit and dance away inches, while having FUN! It uses a longer warm up and cool down with lower impact exercises than traditional Zumba, with steps from Merenge, Salsa, Cumbia, Tango and more. Designed especially for people over 50 or anyone with hip, back, neck or knee concerns and those that have not done an aerobic-style exercise for a long time (or ever). Wear loose clothing and a dance type sneaker, however cross-trainers will work. Please bring a water bottle. Minimum 10 participants. No class on Feb 15, 18 and Apr 15.

Using special motion-sensitive controllers your team can drive a race car, bowl a strike, hit a home run or serve up an ace in tennis with a flick of the wrist rather than with the push of a button. GolfersParticipants must be at least age 55 or over. Divisions: Men’s Monday, Women’s Wednesday and Mixed Thursday. Golf Cart fee of $5 based on 2 people sharing a cart is payable weekly at the golf course. All leagues will consist of doubles. One payment required and includes registration fee, greens fees and scoring fee. Additional Information: All golfers are expected to attend the League Orientation meeting on April 20, 2010 at 10am. This meeting is held at the Novi Senior Center, 25075 Meadowbrook Road. No golf May 31.

Computer Classes

The Senior Center computer room is fully equipped with 6 new computers and a printer. Classes are available for the novice or savvy computer user. Learn step-by-step how to e-mail friends and family and discover the wealth of knowledge available on the World Wide Web. Create a basic spreadsheet and learn how to perform simple operations in Microsoft Excel and how to make a word document. Better yet, learn how to register on-line for classes that the City of Novi offers.

Fundamentals of Computers

Learn the basics of the computer. Become familiar with terms and how to access the internet. Explore the desktop and understand Windows applications. No previous computer experience required.

Alzheimer ’s Association Caregiver Support Group

Has Alzheimer’s affected someone in your life? Support Groups provide an opportunity for family members, friends, caregivers and other interested individuals to meet regularly for mutual emotional support. A great safe place to exchange coping skills with one another in matters relating to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Bereavement Support Group “Opening New Doors”

Loss is a natural part of life. Loss and grief is often accompanied with intense emotions, stress and change. Dr. Michael Meyer’s presentation may offer comfort and help to facilitate growth that assists adjustment to life after loss. We’ll also discuss healthy ways to mourn, find support and hope. This is a very uplifting program.  This program is provided in partnership with the Novi Senior Center and O'Brien Sullivan Funeral Home.

Cell phoneIncrease your safety and security. Free used cell phones are available for senior citizens. Phones have been deactivated but 911 calls may still be made if the call is made in an area that has cell phone service. The phone may be used in an emergency, while traveling or during a phone service disruption at home. For more information call 248-347-0414. We are currently not accepting cell phone donations at this time.

Transportation

Senior Transportation BusThis program provides a safe and secure mode of travel for you, allowing you to continue a healthy, active lifestyle. Novi residents age 55 and older and those with disabilities are eligible for this program. Transportation is available for medical appointments, shopping and trips to the center. An appointment is required. Remember the earlier you call for an appointment, the better your chance of getting the time you request. You can even schedule 1 year in advance. To schedule your appointment, call 248.735.5617 between 8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. Additional Information:  Closed Jan 1, 18, Feb 15 and Apr 2.

Transportation Punch Cards – Your Best Bet!

No need to carry cash! Purchase a prepaid transportation punch card. To ride within the City of Novi you may purchase a $30 punch card for 10 one-way rides. For out of the City of Novi (medical appointments only) you may purchase a $30 punch card for 6 one-way rides. This is a great gift idea for a family member or friend. You may purchase punch cards at the Novi Senior Center or with a transportation driver on your next trip. Punch cards are non-refundable. For further information please call 248-735-5617.

Subsidized Cab Program

You can stay active and involved even if you don't drive or have your own transportation. Novi residents age 55 and older and those with disabilities are eligible to ride the cab. Call the Transportation at 248-735-5617 to obtain your cab card. Once you have your cab card, you may call Community Cab at 248-349-8118 or 248-926-1375 to make your ride reservation.

TEFAP – The Emergency Food Assistance Program

Focus Hope

Focus Hope Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides free monthly food to senior citizens who are 60 years of age or older and reside in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw or Macomb counties. Income Eligibility: 1 person household $1,174 or less monthly and 2 person household $1,579 or less monthly. Commodity food programs allow you to lead a better quality of life. You must pre-register. Loan Closet

WheelchairAre you in need of any special health equipment such as a walker, wheelchair, crutches, shower chair or commode? The Loan Closet, located in the Novi Senior Center has some of these items available to seniors in Novi that are in need. Items on hand are constantly changing, so it’s important you call ahead to make an appointment. We also accept these items to be placed in the Loan Closet.  Must be clean and in good shape. Travel Meeting

Even if you are watching your bottom line a little more these days, there are still plenty of trips available at all price ranges! Come see what we have to offer and broaden your horizons while safely traveling in a group. Come to our travel meetings to hear from the tour directors about all of the exciting day and extended trips offered through the Novi Senior Center. Refreshments offered.

Day and Extended Trips

Stop by the Novi Senior Center to pick up flyers on the 60+ day and extended trips we offer. Register for all trips at the Novi Senior Center. Make checks payable to travel company offering the trip. Sorry, NO cash. Most trips depart from the Novi Civic Center parking lot. Tour companies require a minimum of ten (10) passengers in order to pick up at our location. Please arrive a minimum of 20 minutes prior to departure and park your vehicle in the rear of the parking lot closest to the tennis courts in order to reserve “up close” parking for persons doing short term business with the City.
