“NOVI NEEDLERS” QUILTING GROUP

Give back to the community by joining sewers and non-sewers who create beautiful quilts that put smiles on the faces of those less fortunate. Over the past 16 years, thousands of quilts have been donated to various charitable agencies. Novi Needlers meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Fabric donations welcome: cotton and polyester blends (not silks or knits).

BIGGEST (WEIGHT) LOSER – NOVI STYLE

Consider this a perfect opportunity to be a winner by losing and become a better, healthier, more active “you.” We’ll work together to achieve our fitness goals with a combination of practical health information and active movement. Each session includes 30 minutes of cardio/strength interval training followed by 30 minutes of facilitated discussions about the what, when and why of good nutrition including food journals analysis, body fat measurement, weekly weigh-ins and goal tracking. You’ll also learn the tips and tools for success such as the common diet pitfalls and how to overcome them. No class Apr 6.

ZUMBA GOLD (CARDIO)

The South American dance is cropping up everywhere and with good reason – it is an innovative, fun and exciting cardio-based dance. Designed for the active older adult; the true beginner, those who are not used to exercising, or limited physically. The difference between a Zumba Basic and Gold is that Gold is lower intensity, not quite as fast, but certainly a fun workout! No class Feb 20.

BALANCE TRAINING (STABILITY & BALANCE)

Feeling unsteady? Loss of balance often results in falling and bone fractures. This 30-minute workout is designed to build bone, strengthen core, pelvic and leg muscles while improving posture and balance. You’ll move from station to station doing fun and innovative exercises to keep you smiling and moving! Please note: Participants must be able to move to each station and get on and off the equipment without assistance. Looking for improved circulation, strength, pain relief, range of motion, increased energy levels, alertness and an active way to keep your body moving - this class is for you! We can achieve these goals thru the use of exercise balls and bands. All activities are challenge by choice. Most of the class is done seated in a chair so especially great for those with bad knees, hips or other limitations. Come have fun and maybe make a friend or two! STRETCH AND STRENGTH (CARDIO, WEIGHTS & STRETCHING)

Improve your stamina, strength and flexibility through this program! All exercises are adaptable so you can work at your own pace while doing low-impact aerobics, strength training and stretching. Classes run continuously except on scheduled holidays and instructor vacation. Pre-register for class (discounted price) or pay a $5 drop-in fee. NEW - SNOWSHOEING ADVENTURE AT KENSINGTON METRO PARK

Meet at the Kensington Farm Center for a snowshoeing adventure in the park. This is an intergenerational offering that is available to those 55 years and older, and those family and friends that would like to accompany them. Enjoy a guided hike down the trail along the Huron River that will include hot chocolate. Bring your camera and a warm hat for the stroll in nature. There is an entrance fee for the Kensington Metroparks which is $5.00 per vehicle per day or $25.00 annual fee for all 13 Metroparks. If there is no snow, each person will get a coupon for free snowshoeing for an entire day.

VOLLEYBALL FOR OLDER ADULTS

In partnership with Northville Parks and Recreation Department, volleyball is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10am- 12noon. Volleyball is an active, easy-going sport that is easily adapted for various skill levels. This program is offered by Northville Parks and Recreation Department. GOLF LEAGUES

Participants must be at least age 55 or over. Divisions: Men’s Monday, Women’s Wednesday and Mixed Thursday. Golf cart fee of $5 is paid directly to the golf course and is based on 2 people sharing a cart. All leagues will consist of partners playing a round-robin schedule. One single payment is required that includes the registration, scoring, greens fees and all Golf Outing/Banquet fees (except the required $5 golf outing cart fee for Riverbank members and non-members based on 2 individuals sharing a cart). Additional Information: All golfers are expected to attend the League Orientation meeting on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 10am. This meeting is held at the Novi Senior Center, 25075 Meadowbrook. NEW - SOFTBALL LEAGUE

Join our inaugural season as part of the Kensington Valley Senior Softball League. Participants must be at least age 55 or over. Registration will be taken on an individual basis and team(s) will be formed accordingly. Player fee includes 12 games plus season ending tournament, balls, t-shirt and fields. Each team will pay the umpire $12 prior to starting the game. Home games will be played at Power Park fields in Novi. Team may travel to Hartland, Northville, Howell and other sites depending upon league registration. If necessary, teams must be prepared to play other days of the week to accommodate rain-outs or tournament play. ASA Softball Rules will be used with modifications, and a mat to determine balls and strikes. Additional Information: Please call Tori Heglin, Recreation Programmer, 248.347.0422. Women’s league and a 62+ division will be offered if there is enough interest. All players are expected to attend the League Orientation meeting on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10am. SENIOR BRIGADE – PROTECT YOURSELF

As Michigan’s population ages, they face increasingly complex decisions on critical issues such as health care and financial matters. The elderly are also frequently targets of unscrupulous scam artists that prey upon this segment of our population. There are literally hundreds of resources available to senior citizens but limited knowledge that they exist or how to access these services. Likewise, there are many scam artists seeking to take advantage of seniors, but limited awareness of how to recognize and avoid them. The Senior Brigade program is designed to bring this information to Michigan’s seniors and their families in a comprehensive, user-friendly format. SKYPE – VIDEO CHAT WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS USING YOUR COMPUTER

This hands-on class will explain and demonstrate free over-the-internet video calling and specifically the service named Skype. We will cover how to download the software, create a user name and place a call. The use of a built in or separately purchased video camera and microphone will also be discussed. Feel free to bring a laptop if you have one, but there will be two laptops present so a video chat can be conducted without any additional equipment from students. Oovoo, another service, will also be addressed as well.

DIGITAL PHOTO ALBUMS – STEP BY STEP

Create online scrapbook/photo albums on the computer using the latest websites. We’ll take you step-by-step starting with what online scrapbooking is to how to use the web to create a book. Activities include: Loading photos to your book, choosing a theme, using basic editing and customizing functions as well as how to order and share your book when it’s complete. You’ll need an e-mail account, general knowledge of the Internet as well as photos on a CD, a memory stick, or on photo storage sites like Picasa or Flickr. Purchasing class materials is optional.

FIRE AND FALL PREVENTION FOR OLDER ADULTS

In an effort to better protect and prepare our older adults, the Novi Fire Department is excited to announce a new program aimed at reducing the threat of injury and fire to Novi’s residents. The Fire and Fall Prevention for Older Adults Program is designed to educate residents of the hazards within their own homes that could cause harm by leading to a fire or causing injury. Slips and falls are the main source of injury for older people in the home. Fire Department Inspection personnel will offer recommendations to ensure your health and safety. They will also check to in ensure the proper installation and maintenance of at least one smoke detector on every floor of the home. The Fire and Fall Prevention Program will be delivered to Novi residents through both group presentations and by making in-home visits upon their request. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP - “OPENING NEW DOORS”

Loss is a natural part of life. Loss and grief is often accompanied with intense emotions, stress and change. Dr. Michael Meyer’s presentation may offer comfort and help to facilitate growth that assists adjustment to life after loss. We’ll also discuss healthy ways to mourn, find support and hope. This program is proudly presented in partnership with O’Brien Sullivan Funeral Home.

CELL PHONES

Increase your safety and security. Free used cell phones are available for senior citizens. Phones have been deactivated but 911 calls may still be made if the call is made in an area that has cell phone service. The phone may be used in an emergency, while traveling or during a phone service disruption at home. For more information call 248.347.0414. LOAN CLOSET

The durable medical equipment Loan Closet is located in the Novi Senior Center. Items such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, bathing aids and protective underwear are available for needy older adults. Items on hand change constantly, so it’s important that you call to ensure that we have the item you need - ready and waiting for you! We do accept donations of clean items that are in good shape to be included in our Loan Closet. Please call 248.347.0414. Loan Closet closed on Jan 2, 16, Feb 20, Mar 2, Apr 6.

TRANSPORTATION

The program provides a safe and secure mode of travel for you, allowing you to continue a healthy, active lifestyle. Novi residents age 55 and older or physically challenged non-seniors are eligible for this program. Transportation is available for medical appointments, shopping and trips to the center. Advance notice of 2 days is required for transports during regular business hours. Remember the earlier you call for an appointment, the better your chance of getting the time you request. You can even schedule 1 year in advance. To schedule your appointment, call 248.735.5617 between 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri. Closed Jan 2, 16, Feb 20 and Apr 6. Expanded on-demand Van Transportation is available until 9pm Monday-Friday and 5pm on Saturday for employment or appointments that can not be made otherwise during the day. Advanced reservation of 72 hours is required for transports during the expanded hours of service.

No need to carry cash! Purchase a pre-paid transportation punch card. This is a great gift idea for a family member or friend. You may purchase punch cards at the Novi Senior Center or with a transportation driver on your next trip. Punch cards are non-refundable. FOCUS HOPE

Focus Hope Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides free monthly food to those who are 60 years of age or older and reside in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw or Macomb counties. Income Eligibility: 1 person household $1,174 or less monthly and 2 person household $1,579 or less monthly. Commodity food programs allow you to lead a better quality of life. DAY AND EXTENDED TRIPS

Reservation Information:
Once you have selected a trip, registration takes place at the Novi Senior Center. Please make your checks payable to the travel company offering the trip. Sorry, NO cash can be accepted.

Departure Information:
Please arrive at least 20 minutes prior to departure. Most trips depart from the Novi Civic Center. Short term parking is available at the rear of the Novi Civic Center parking lot closest to the tennis courts.
