Pen Pals

We are seeking older adults to be Pen Pals with elementary school children. The purpose of this program is to create a bond that is formed through written communication with a special friend. Interested adults please contact the Novi Senior Center at 248.347.0414.

Time for Turkey

Sliced turkey, gravy, homemade stuffing, whipped potatoes, green beans, rolls and pumpkin pie with whipped cream - umm good! Lunch served by the Pilgrims. Entertainment provided by the Novi Senior Show Players. Door prizes and an opportunity to socialize. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance.

“Scarlet Ladies” Red Hat Group

Get out those red hats and join our group here at the Novi Senior Center. A great way to meet new people and celebrate who you are and what you can be! This is a fun loving group of ladies who like to celebrate their age by wearing red hats and purple clothing. The group decides what activities they would like to participate in: lunches, movies and special events, all in a group and all wearing red hats. Age 50+. Bingo

Bridge – Contract

Contract Bridge is played by 4 players who form 2 partner teams and is considered a “trick taking card game”. Develop your strategy each week through contract bridge. Additional Information: No Bridge on Nov 26, Dec 24 & 31.

“Novi Needlers” Quilting Group

Give back to the community by joining sewers and non-sewers who create beautiful quilts to be donated to various agencies such as First Step, Catholic Social Services, Denby House and the Salvation Army. Novi Needlers meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Fabric donations welcome, 100% cotton only. Over 122 quilts donated in 2008.

Monday Movie Matinee - Monthly

Join your friends for the monthly movie matinee at the Novi Senior Center. See your favorite new or old movie, refreshments provided. No reservation needed. Turn in your suggestions or movie request at the front desk at the Senior Center.

NEW - Total Body Sculpt (Strength Training )

Build lean muscle mass in all the major muscles of the body with the use of hand held weights. We begin by warming up to work the upper and lower body and then target the abs. You will increase your metabolism with this intense muscle building workout. Through a repetition of different exercises you will increase muscle mass and improve bode density to prevent osteoporosis. All levels welcome, beginners can use no weights and work their way up to increasing weights and intensity. Must have a minimum of 8 participants. Additional Information: Floor mat and two 5 lb. and two 8 lb. weights recommended.

NEW – Pilates: Over 50

If you’re over age 50, this class is especially for you! Pilates is a wonderful way to tone and strengthen the waist, hips, derriere, back and abs while boosting strength, flexibility and coordination. Enhance your posture and balance while reducing pain and stiffness. Pilates will help you reach and maintain your fitness goals without stressing the joints. Must have a minimum of 8 participants. Body Recall

This exercise program is for you! Reclaim and strengthen muscles and learn the benefits of chair, standing and floor exercise. Therapeutic Massage

For a fabulous feeling of improved health, relieved muscle tension and stress and increased energy, experience a therapeutic massage. More individuals are turning to massage to relieve the pain of arthritis, help recover from surgery or injuries and maintain flexibility and fitness. Massage therapists are certified. Stretch and Strength

Improve your stamina, strength and flexibility. All exercises are adaptable to work at your own pace and fitness level. Each class includes low-impact aerobics, strength training and stretching. Classes run continuously except on scheduled holidays and instructor vacation. Pre-register for class (discounted price) or pay a $5 drop-in fee. Additional Information: No class Nov 11 and 27. Drop-in: Oct 26, 28, (30-class will be held at the Novi Civic Center), Dec 14, 21 and 23. No class Dec 24, 2009-Jan 3, 2010. Bring hand-held weights if you have them and a water bottle. Hearing Exams

Be proactive in keeping yourself healthy! David Wisgird from “Hear Clear” will be at the Novi Senior Center to give complete hearing exams by appointment. Each appointment will take 1 hour and 15 minutes. Please call the Novi Senior Center at 248.347.0414 or stop by the Senior Center to schedule your appointment.

Wii Games

Are you ready, Nintendo Wii is here! Using special motion-sensitive controllers your team can drive a race car, bowl a strike, hit a home run or serve up an ace in tennis with a flick of the wrist rather than with the push of a button. Wii exercise is also a great way to get fit while having fun. Most of all, Wii is a great way to spend time with friends and have lots of good conversation while being active. Walking for Health

Get your heart pumping while you walk on our one mile mapped course at Meadowbrook Commons. Walk with a group or on your own. Stop by the main counter and pick up your map today and begin a healthy lifestyle by walking. Quick Fact: Each additional mile walked or run by a sedentary person would give him/her an extra 21 minutes of life. No registration required.

TOPS - Take Off Pounds Sensibly

By creating your own wellness plan, health costs are reduced and quality of life improves. A Chapter of TOPS is hosting meetings at the Meadowbrook Commons and new members are always welcome! For more information contact Rebecca Boyke at 248.305.8646.

Blood Pressure

Check yourself regularly this winter to stay healthy. Every Wednesday blood pressure checks are offered. Your blood pressure record will be on file at the Senior Center so you can track your health. No pre-registration required. Additional Information: No Blood Pressure check on Nov 11.

Dance with a Live Band

The Internationals will play while you enjoy good friends and refreshments. Drop-in’s only.

Line Dance - Intermediate

Western steps and regular line dances are the focus of this program. Bring your friends or come by yourself to enjoy dancing and great music. No drop-in for this class. Youmust pre-register for each 4 week session or purchase a punch card. Additional Information: Class held at Senior Center on Sep 10, 17, Oct 15 and Nov 3. No class Nov 26, Dec 24 and 31.

NEW – Computer Classes

Our computer room is fully equipped with 6 new computers and a printer. Classes are available for the novice or those already computer savvy. Learn step-by-step how to e-mail friends and family and discover the wealth of knowledge available on the World Wide Web. Create a basic spreadsheet and learn how to perform simple operations in Microsoft Excel and how to make a word document. Better yet, learn how to register on-line for classes that the City of Novi offers.

Fundamentals of Computers

Learn the basics of the computer. Become familiar with terms and how to access the internet. Explore the Desktop and understand Windows applications. No previous computer experience required. Additional Information: No class Nov 11.

Bookmobile – Novi Library

Stimulate your brain! Great selections of literature are brought to the center for your convenience. Large print books are also available. A great way to continue learning.

“Bookworm ” Reading and Discussion Group

Increase cultural unity and enjoy the company of others, while reading and discussing a wide variety of titles from different authors. Group meets once a month at the Senior Center.

Alzheimer ’s Association Caregiver Support Group

Has Alzheimer’s affected someone in your life? Support Groups provide an opportunity for family members, friends, caregivers and other interested individuals to meet regularly for mutual emotional support. A great safe place to exchange coping skills with one another in matters relating to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Bereavement Support Group “Opening New Doors”

Loss is a natural part of life. Loss and grief is often accompanied with intense emotions, stress and change. Dr. Michael Meyer’s presentation may offer comfort and help to facilitate growth that assists adjustment to life after loss. We’ll also discuss healthy ways to mourn, find support and hope. This is a very uplifting program.

Cell Phones

Increase your safety and security. Free used cell phones are available for senior citizens. Phones have been deactivated but 911 calls may still be made if the call is made in an area that has cell phone service. The phone may be used in an emergency, while traveling or during a phone service disruption at home. For more information call 248-347-0414. We are currently not accepting cell phone donations at this time.

Subsidized Cab Program

You can stay active and involved without a car! Novi residents age 55 and older and those with disabilities are eligible to ride the cab. Call the Transportation at 248-735-5617 to obtain your cab card, and then call Community Cab at 248-349-8118 or 248-926-1375 to make your ride reservation.

Price: $4 one-way within the Novi City boundaries

Transportation

This program provides a safe and secure mode of travel for you, allowing you to continue a healthy, active lifestyle. Novi residents age 55 and older and those with disabilities are eligible for this program. Transportation is available for medical appointments, shopping and trips to the center. An appointment is required. Remember the earlier you call for an appointment, the better your chance of getting the time you request. You can even schedule 1 year in advance. To schedule your appointment, call 248.735.5617 between 8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. Additional Information:  Closed Sep 7, Nov 11, 26, 27, Dec 24, 25 and 31.

Transportation Punch Cards – Your Best Bet!

No need to carry cash! Purchase a prepaid transportation punch card. To ride within the City of Novi you may purchase a $30 punch card for 10 one-way rides. For out of the City of Novi (medical appointments only) you may purchase a $30 punch card for 6 one-way rides. This is a great gift idea for a family member or friend. You may purchase punch cards at the Novi Senior Center or with a transportation driver on your next trip. Punch cards are non-refundable. For further information please call 248-735-5617.

TEFAP – The Emergency Food Assistance Program

The Emergency Food Assistance Program provides quarterly food for seniors who are income eligible - 1 person household $1,307 or less monthly and 2 person household $1,760 or less monthly. You must pre-register. For more information contact Jan McAlpine at 248-347-0421.

Focus Hope

Focus Hope Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides free monthly food to senior citizens who are 60 years of age or older and reside in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw or Macomb counties. Income Eligibility: 1 person household $1,174 or less monthly and 2 person household $1,579 or less monthly. Commodity food programs allow you to lead a better quality of life. You must pre-register. Home Delivered Meals on Wheels

You’re eligible for Meals on Wheels delivery if you are unable to leave your home (must meet criteria). Call Western Oakland Meals On Wheels at 1-888-886-8971 for more information. Loan Closet

Are you in need of any special health equipment such as a walker, wheelchair, crutches, shower chair or commode? The Loan Closet, located in the Novi Senior Center has some of these items available to seniors in Novi that are in need. Items on hand are constantly changing, so it’s important you call ahead to make an appointment. Although there is no charge, we do ask you return them to us clean. Travel Meeting

The benefits of travel are boundless! Broaden your horizons while safely traveling in a group. Come to our travel meeting every other month to hear from the tour directors about all of the exciting day and extended trips offered through the Novi Senior Center. Refreshments offered.

Day and Extended Trips

Stop by the Novi Senior Center to pick up flyers on the 60+ day and extended trips we offer. Register for all trips at the Novi Senior Center. Make checks payable to travel company offering the trip. Sorry, NO cash. Most trips depart from the Novi Civic Center parking lot. Tour companies require a minimum of ten (10) passengers in order to pick up at our location. Please arrive a minimum of 20 minutes prior to departure and park your vehicle in the rear of the parking lot closest to the tennis courts in order to reserve “up close” parking for persons doing short term business with the City.
