Frequently Asked Questions

If someone comes into contact with poison, who should I call?

If the victim is unconscious, not breathing, having convulsions, seizures, or is displaying obvious signs and symptoms of poisoning – call 911 immediately.

Even if you only suspect someone has been poisoned, do not wait to see if symptoms develop.

The National Poison Control Emergency number is: 1-800-222-1222.  This number will let you to talk to poison control experts 24/7/365 when calling from anywhere in the United States.  The number is toll free and confidential.  All poison control centers in the United States use this number. You can call this number anytime with questions regarding poisoning or poison prevention – emergency or not.

Who do I contact for information regarding the Novi Fire Department “File of Life” program?

You can pick up a ‘File of Life’ folder at any Novi Fire Station or the Novi Senior Center. If you are unable to do this, please email:

FPO Todd Seog
FPO Jonathan Gearns-Hazlett

Fire Department personnel will also arrange to speak with your Homeowners Association, Civic or Senior Group to further explain the need and benefits of this valuable program.  Additional information on the File of Life is available by clicking here.

I would like to learn CPR, where can I get information?

The Novi Fire Department trains citizens in child and adult CPR. Students will receive American Heart Association certification for completion of the class. CPR classes are held on the first Wednesday of every month (except June, July & August). Classes are conducted at Fire Station 4 (on the southeast corner of 10 Mile & Wixom Rd.) You can register for CPR Classes by clicking here.

Are Novi Fire Department services free?

The Novi Fire department emergency response to incidents is funded by local City taxes. Some non-emergency responses and some public education classes will soon implement a minimal cost recovery fee for administrative services.

How can I tell if my smoke detector/alarm is working correctly?

Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month. If a smoke detector begins to make a chirping or beeping sound, it is time to replace the battery.  All smoke detectors have a test button that you push to test the alarm.  If there is no sound, replace the battery and retest.  If the alarm still does not sound, replace the smoke detector with a new one.  If the test button does not operate properly, the alarm should be replaced.  Never use open flame devices to test an alarm.

The Novi Fire Department believes every person should have smoke detectors in their home. If you live in the City of Novi and you cannot obtain a smoke detector (or if you are unable to buy one) the Fire Department will install a smoke detector free of charge. This program is possible because of the donations of valuable corporate partners within the City of Novi who provide the Fire Department these “life-savers” for free. If you do not live in the City of Novi, call your local fire department and ask about a free smoke detector.

According to FEMA, several studies have concluded that when working smoke alarms are present, the chance of death resulting from fire is cut in half.  Smoke detectors have saved thousands of lives, but several problems exist.  First, 12% of homes without alarms have more than half of the fires.  Second, it is estimated that 1/3 of smoke alarms are not working properly - often due to failure to replace a worn out battery.  Third, many homes do not have as many smoke alarms as are needed to protect the occupants properly.  Please make sure your smoke detectors are working properly!

When is the Fire Department Open House?

The City of Novi Fire Department Open House is traditionally held in the fall during Fire Prevention Week.  Historically, Fire Prevention Week is always the week in October that includes October 8th. That is the anniversary date of the Great Chicago Fire.
