Regulated Wetlands Map and Ordinance
August 2009
Wetlands are considered one of the most valuable natural
resources within the City of Novi. Wetlands provide many benefits to
society such as fish and wildlife habitats, natural water quality
improvement, flood storage, shoreline erosion protection, and
opportunities for recreation and aesthetic appreciation. Protecting
wetlands also betters our health and safety by reducing flood damage
and preserving water quality.
An entire section of the City Code is
dedicated to the protection, conservation and management of wetland
areas. The provisions contained in the ordinance have allowed for
the preservation, enhancement and even creation of wetlands existing
in Novi today. The City also maintains a Regulated Wetland and
Watercourse Map that serves as a general guide toward
environmentally sound and responsible land development. An applicant
proposing development or alteration on a site containing wetlands is
required to provide a wetland delineation by a qualified
environmental professional.
Over the past few months, City Staff and Consultants completed an
extensive assessment of the City’s wetlands. An updated Regulated
Wetland and Watercourse Map is now complete and available for public
review. Along with the revised mapping, we have taken the
opportunity to update the City’s Wetland Protection Ordinance. Minor
alterations were made to the text to bring the language up to date.
Please take a moment to review the current and proposed
Regulated Wetland and Watercourse Map and
Wetland
Protection Ordinance. Both documents can be reached by clicking
on the links. Should you have questions or concerns, we encourage
you to complete the Wetland
Update Questionnaire.
In the near future, the City’s Planning Commission will hold a
Public Hearing on the proposed map and ordinance revisions. The date
of the public hearing will be published in the Novi News in advance.
Your written comments will be provided to the Planning Commission
prior to the hearing, and you are invited to speak at the Public
Hearing should you choose. All comments are welcome and we thank you
for your participation!
