FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOVI, Mich., June 19, 2008 – During the past few weeks, the Novi Police Department has been investigating eight complaints where garages had been entered and items stolen in the southern residential area of the community.  In most cases, the items stolen were golf clubs.  The investigation led officers to a resale shop in Livonia where the clubs were being taken and sold.

The Novi Police Department has arrested three suspects for First Degree Home Invasion. The three suspects are identified as 19-year-old Jonathan Sayre, 17-year-old Daniel Young, and 18-year-old Justin Griesemer.  All three suspects are Novi residents.

All three subjects were formally charged with First Degree Home Invasion, a Felony carrying a penalty of up to 20 years and fine up to $5000. The three were arraigned in the 52-1 District Court and all received a $25,000.00 cash bond.  All three subjects are currently being held the Oakland County Jail awaiting a Pre-Exam Conference before Judge Brian MacKenzie on June 25th at 9:15 am.

“Many crimes occur due to an opportunity, like an open garage door,” notes Novi’s Chief of Police David E. Molloy.  “Unfortunately, many people leave their garage doors open and run to the store on a quick errand or forget and leave it open all night.  This presents an unnecessary opportunity for others to steal valuable items.”

The Novi Police Department offers the following tips to keep your valuables safe:

  • Keep your garage door shut when you are not inside it.
  • Take valuable items out of your vehicle when it is parked inside your garage or left in your driveway.
  • Do not leave your car keys in your car, even if the garage door is shut.
  • Always lock your car, even if it is parked inside a garage.
  • Lock any connecting doors to the house.

The Novi Police Department is asking anybody with information in these crimes to contact Detective Mike Wilson or Detective Erick Zinser of the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
