On February 4, 2008, the Novi Police Department responded to an
armed robbery at Elias Jewelry & Repairs, located inside Twelve Oaks
Mall. A male suspect had entered the store and requested to look at
engagement rings. The suspect was wearing a U.S. Marshal’s
identification badge around his neck and carried a semiautomatic
handgun in a holster on his right hip. He had a set of silver
handcuffs attached to his belt.
After looking at several rings, the subject took a nearly one
carat diamond, valued at more than $16,500, and threatened to shoot
the sales clerk if she followed him. As he exited the store, he
passed the jewelry store owner and also threatened him not to
follow. The suspect then exited the mall via the west side doors.
On February 18, 2008, the suspected was arrested by the Taylor
Police Department after entering a Helzberg Diamonds Jewelry Store
in their community. The suspect was wearing the identification badge
and handgun described in a Police Bulletin distributed among jewelry
store owners in the metropolitan Detroit area. Helzberg Diamonds
staff recognized the suspect and called the Taylor Police
Department. Following his arrest, the suspect was turned over to the
custody of the Novi Police Department.
