FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Novi, Michigan, January 17, 2008 – At approximately 8:40am, a
resident of the Springs Apartments, located on Pontiac Trail, just
east of Beck Road, called 911 to report her car had been stolen. She
stated she had started her 1998 Buick Century in the parking lot to
allow it to warm up and when she returned to the vehicle a short
time later the automobile was gone.
Officers from the Novi Police Department on routine patrol
noticed the stolen vehicle traveling south on Novi Road at Twelve
Mile Road. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled
eastbound on I-96. The officers continued to attempt to stop the
vehicle as it continued southbound on I-275. The vehicle exited on
to Seven Mile Road and turned east. The pursuit ended as the stolen
vehicle crashed into a Dodge Caravan at Seven Mile Road and Victor
Parkway in Livonia. The two occupants of the stolen vehicle fled on
foot and were arrested after a short chase with the assistance of
officers from the Livonia Police Department. The occupant of the
Caravan, a 39-year-old female from Livonia, was transported to St.
Mary’s Hospital in Livonia with minor injuries.
The two juvenile suspects, a 16- and 14-year-old, both Novi
residents, are currently in custody at the Novi Police Department,
and will be lodged at Oakland County Children’s Village, pending a
hearing on January 18, 2008. The 16-year-old does not have a
driver’s license.
"With the cold temperatures we experience in Michigan, many
drivers want to start their vehicles to warm them before beginning
their morning commute," notes Novi’s Chief of Police David Molloy.
"Unfortunately, many vehicles are reported stolen because they were
left running and unattended. This incident serves as a reminder to
never leave your keys in your vehicle, even in one’s own driveway."
