NOVI, Mich., May 31, 2017 – The Novi Police Department has identified the Novi residents who were found unconscious in the community pool at the Glens of Northville apartment complex late yesterday afternoon.
The victims are Nagavaju Surepalli, 31, and his son Ananth Surepalli, 3. Both are from from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. The victims are survived by their 29-year-old wife and mother, respectively.
The father and son were playing poolside sometime after 3 p.m. on Tuesday when the child inadvertently fell into the deep end of the pool while riding his tricycle. The father entered the 5 feet of water to rescue his son and became a victim himself as neither were experienced swimmers. This particular pool does not staff a lifeguard and they were the only occupants in the pool area. The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted a post-mortem examination this morning and ruled the incident an accidental drowning.
Investigators and relatives of the victims have worked with the Consulate General of India, Chicago and New York offices, to assist with overseas family notification and funeral arrangements. The family had been in the United States for approximately three years on an H-1B non-immigrant Visa for work purposes.
Novi Police are still investigating the matter and ask anyone with further information to contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
