Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service - Remembering our Veterans and Showcasing Community Pride

NOVI, Mich., May 11, 2017 – On Monday, May 29, the City of Novi will commemorate Memorial Day with a morning of activities focused on reflection and tributes to veterans who served and for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Hundreds of participants, spectators, and runners will showcase Novi’s community spirit.
Memorial Day Run
The day begins at 8 a.m. with the sixth annual Memorial Day Run with 5K and 10K races. The one-mile Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m. The starting line is located at Fuerst Park (10 Mile and Taft Roads). Pre-registration is recommended at novimemorialdayrun.com.
At 8:45 a.m., a tribute ceremony, presented by VFW Post 1519 and American Legion Post 147, will take place at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens (Novi and 12 Mile Roads).
The parade begins at 10 a.m. and travels west along Ten Mile Road from Karim Boulevard to the Novi Civic Center. Parade highlights include Novi High School & Middle School bands, antique cars, Novi businesses, churches and civic organizations. Floats will be available for Veterans to ride on and families may decorate their bikes and join the parade.
Residents and Veterans wishing to take part can pre-register online at cityofnovi.org/memorialday, in-person at the Novi Older Adult Services or Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services offices, Meadowbrook Activity Center, or by calling (248) 347-0414. The parade entry deadline is May 19.
Following the parade, veterans, both living and deceased, will be honored with a fitting tribute. Included in the ceremony are six Novi Community School District students singing the National Anthem; remarks from Mayor Bob Gatt; an invocation and benediction from Novi’s police and fire chaplain; Novi Scout Troops leading the Pledge of Allegiance; a wreath laying, gun salute and playing of “Taps.” Novi Choralaires will sing “Armed Forces – The Pride of America” and “God Bless America.”
Retired Air Force Colonel Craig Stigleman will deliver the Memorial Day message to remind everyone veterans’ sacrifices date back years before us and will go on years after us; during peace time and war time. We should strive to never forget the efforts of those who have died for our freedom.
Veterans and their families will enjoy a lunch, presented by American Legion - Post 147, VFW Post 1519 and Jersey Mike’s Subs following the Memorial Service at the Novi Civic Center.
