Novi planning for future development, growth - City in process of updating Master Plan for Land Use & Thoroughfare Master Plan

NOVI, Mich., June 14, 2016 – It’s never too early to plan for the future, especially as it pertains to the development of a growing community.
The City of Novi is currently in the process of updating a pair of master plans – Master Plan for Land Use and Thoroughfare Master Plan
– that will serve as blueprints for development and shape the future of the community over the next 10 to 20 years.
The Master Plan for Land Use was last updated in 2010. Since then, development in the City has continued at a brisk pace, including significant new residential subdivisions, high-tech research and office development and numerous reinvestments in the existing regional and local shopping centers.
Looking ahead, goals of the 2016 Master Plan for Land Use include: ensuring the availability of a wide range of attractive housing choices, building on the City’s identity of high-quality neighborhoods and schools by preserving historic resources and expanding cultural opportunities, exhibiting environmental stewardship, investing wisely into infrastructure improvements, and ensuring sustainable development that looks forward to the future.
The plan also includes a Grand River Avenue Corridor Plan that is intended to identify and incorporate community character aspects, seek to promote economic vitality, and help recognize opportunities for development and redevelopment throughout the area.
In terms of the Thoroughfare Master Plan, the intent is to identify deficiencies in the existing major road network, provide traffic forecasts, review the functional classifications of the roads, develop alternative thoroughfare improvement plans, rank future road projects and help identify transit needs in order to protect and enhance the quality of life through an efficient, safe and connected transportation system.

Novi’s Planning Commission is scheduled to review and comment on draft reports for both the Master plans on June 22 starting at 7 pm
. We invite the public to review the plans online or visit the Community Development Department to learn more about the recommendations contained in those plans.
Another public presentation for the Thoroughfare Master Plan Final Report has been scheduled for June 23 from 7-8 pm
in the Novi City Council Chambers. This report is recommending improvements to Beck Road and Ten Mile Road.
Following the Planning Commission meeting, the City Council will be asked to approve the distribution of the draft plans to the appropriate governmental or public agencies, and during the review period of 63 days additional comments from the public will be accepted. Consideration of adoption of the plans is expected to occur following a public hearing in September of 2016.
