Starting a fitness program may be one of the best things you can do for your health. Physical activity can improve bone and heart health, improve balance and coordination, develop muscle strength, and assist with weight loss. The Novi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department offers a variety of fitness classes from low-impact workouts that help strengthen and tone muscles to high-impact aerobics which helps burn fat and calories. Classes are available morning, evening and weekends and our professional instructors will help guide you to a healthier you. How do I find the “right” class for me? You’ll find a variety of fitness classes that vary from high-impact aerobics to gentle strength building. Each program includes age suggestions. These are suggestions; you’re encouraged to reference the ability icon to determine if the class may be right for you. Still not sure? Contact us to try one class free of charge. Fall is the perfect time to keep your muscles, bones, and joints as healthy as possible. The more active you are, the healthier your body becomes and the less likely you are to contract musculoskeletal diseases that can shorten your life. The City of Novi offers group fitness classes that can make your muscles stronger, increase cardiovascular strength and bone density, and improve balance and flexibility. Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you haven’t exercised for a long time, have chronic health problems, or you have any concerns. Our Stretch and Strength class offers effective exercise in a fun, social environment. This class helps to increase tissue elasticity, improve range of motion, and increase muscle strength and flexibility. Classes run continuously except on scheduled holidays and instructor vacation. Level 3 Fitness Ability Interval Cardio Workout

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves alternating between very intense bouts of exercise and low intensity exercise. HIIT can be used both anaerobically (in the gym with weights) and aerobically with cardio. Looking to tone up, gain muscle strength and increase flexibility? Then this class is for you! We can achieve these goals through the use of exercise resistance training. All activities are challenging by choice. Most exercises are done seated in a chair, so this class is especially accommodating for those with bad knees, hips or other limitations. Tai Chi, sometimes referred to as “meditation in motion,” is an ancient Chinese martial art consisting of a sequence of slow, graceful motions that relax and strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. Family Self Defense Center (FSDC) has provided instruction in  Isshinryu Karate since 1992 and was chosen “Top Five Isshinryu Dojo in the Country” by the Karate Hall of Fame for 10 years. FSDC promotes a “family-friendly” atmosphere for the study of traditional Isshinryu Karate and Sport Weaponry. Founders of the school, Mr. Z, 8th, and Ms. Chris, 7th, degree Black Belt Master Instructors, have been instructing for over 40 years. Both were chosen “Top Contributors” nationally for their instruction of Isshinryu Karate, as well as “National Instructors of the Year” countless times. All participants must sign a Wildwind Liability Form available at registration. Riders must wear full length pants, a sturdy shoe with complete foot coverage. All classes have a 200lb weight limit.

Introduction to Horses

This two-hour, hands-on introductory class gives a wide view of working around horses. You’ll learn to groom, saddle and do mounted and unmounted activities. Introduction to horses is a great adventure for family members of all ages to do together. This mini-clinic is a great way to decide if you would like to take riding lessons. Students ages 6-8 must be accompanied by an adult. (No cost for adult.)

Jump into basketball this fall with Leisure Unlimited! These classes are geared toward the beginning or intermediate player. Kids will learn passing, dribbling, shooting and develop a better understanding for the game. We’ll cover strategy, offensive plays, defenses and player positions. Drills are fun and progressive. Chili Chilly Softball Showdown

Join us for the Chili Chilly Softball Showdown! The co-ed event will feature one pitch per at bat, prizes for all participants and a lunch featuring koney dogs from Kerby’s Koney Island. Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. Teams will take part in a double elimination format with games lasting six innings. The Novi Civic Center will be open to heat up, and wooden bats will be provided. Register your team online or call 248.347.0400 to be put on a free agent list. PLEASE NOTE: If fields are not playable due to unseasonably warm weather, the makeup date will be Sat, Feb. 10.

Chair Volleyball

More fun than you can possibly stand – while seated! Come enjoy this fun-filled game with a beach ball. Chair volleyball is great for upper body mobility and joint flexibility. It enhances your muscle tone, reflexes, hand-to-eye coordination, and endurance. The game is played with a beach ball and a five foot high net. Rules are similar to regular volleyball except you are sitting down! No program on Nov 7.

LEARN TO SKATE

Times, prices, and days vary Registration available in person, over the phone, and online at www.noviicearena.com.  Come be a part of one of the largest Learn to Skate programs in the country! Our program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Basic Skills program. Lessons are given by highly qualified professional skating instructors. All classes consist of 30 minutes of instruction with an additional 30 minutes of practice time. All skaters will also receive a Public Skate punch card for a limited number of free admissions. Classes are offered for people of all ages; times and days vary to fi t your schedule.

Novi Youth Hockey Association

Novi Ice Arena is home to the Novi Youth Hockey Association. The NYHA is a non-profit, volunteer-led organization committed to cultivating and developing youths in the sport of ice hockey. Both house and travel teams are offered to support players ranging from ages 4-18. There are more than 500 players and coaches registered with the NYHA, making it one of the largest in Michigan and the USA. Over the years, NYHA teams have won state and district championships, along with numerous tournament wins. The hockey season runs from early August (travel)/late August (house) through March. The house teams (beginning with the Squirt division) and the travel teams participate within the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League (LCAHL), the nation’s largest amateur youth hockey league. The Mini-Mite and Mite house players compete against local teams. High School Hockey

Novi Ice Arena is the home of the Novi High School Wildcats and the Northville High School Mustangs varsity hockey teams. We are also the home for the Novi Prep team and the Northville Prep and Girls teams. We host many high school hockey games and events each year.

SKATING CLUB OF NOVI

Established in 1998 with 25 members, the Skating Club of Novi is a volunteer organization that has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association since 1999. Since then, the club has grown to over 150 members. The club is dedicated to the promotion of figure skating, and supports many activities at the Novi Ice Arena to further this goal. The Skating Club hosts the Annual Ice Show in the early spring that showcases the talents of our Learn to Skate students as well as our recreational and competitive figure skaters. Our coaching staff is for all levels of skaters, from beginner to competitive; individual freestyle and dance. In December, the Skating Club of Novi is hosts their annual Holiday Exhibition. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. Freestyle ice is available six days per week (Monday-Friday mornings and afternoons, and Saturday mornings).
