Island Escape - A Senior Socialite Event

New - Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Japanese Tea Ceremony, also called the Way of Tea, is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, powdered green tea. Come and observe each action, how a kettle is used, how a teacup is examined, and how tea is scooped into a cup. It is performed in a very specific way. Following the Tea Ceremony, the ladies from the Japan Society of Detroit Women’s Club will demonstrate proper dressing of the kimono and perform some origami paper folding techniques. PATH Diabetes (Personal Action Toward Health)

More fun than you can possibly stand – while seated! Come enjoy this fun-filled game with a beach ball. Chair volleyball is great for upper body mobility and joint flexibility. It enhances your muscle tone, reflexes, hand-to-eye coordination, and endurance. The game is played with a beach ball and a five foot high net. Rules are similar to regular volleyball except you are sitting down! This program is presented in partnership with the Glick Law Firm.

Whether you’ve never ridden a horse before or you’re an expert, Wildwind will get you moving with the horses. A one hour English riding lesson is the equivalent of a 45 minute aerobic workout. Many people with joint problems, arthritis, and low muscle tone improve their overall health by therapeutic riding. Grooming and caring for your horse is a pleasure everyone enjoys. Extended mounting blocks are used to make it easy to get on and off your horse. Wildwind offers many clinics for seniors to get more involved. A certified therapeutic riding instructor will teach the class and make sure everyone is moving in the right direction. All riders must wear full length pants, and sturdy shoe with complete foot coverage. There is a 200lb weight limit for this class. No class July 4.

Keep Rolling - Bicycling

We are excited to partner with Performance Bicycle of Novi to give everyone (all ages welcome) a chance to ride with a group. Group rides encourage consistent exercise by connecting riders and adding the social aspects of outdoor fun. This is a beginners group that rides at a leisurely pace with a “No Rider Left Behind” commitment. Morning rides are available every Saturday and travel approximately 10 miles. Whether you are new to Medicare or a long-time participant, it’s important to get the facts so that you can make informed decisions. A Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP, Inc.) representative will answer your Medicare questions, help fill out forms, and assist with evaluating Medigap supplemental plans, Medicare Advantage and long-term care insurance policies. Come to your appointment prepared with information about your health insurance needs and a list of all the prescriptions you are taking. MMAP is a private, non-profit agency that is not connected with any insurance company and does not sell insurance products. Pre-registration required by calling 248.347.0414.

Durable Medical Equipment Loan Closet

Items such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, bathing aids and protective garments are available for older adults in need. Available items change constantly, so it’s important that you call ahead to ensure that we have the item you need ready and waiting for you. Equipment donations are accepted based on need. Transportation Services

Let Us Do the Driving!

The City of Novi’s Senior Transportation Program provides specialized transportation for residents of Novi ages 55 and older, or those younger than 55 with a limiting disability. The service cannot accommodate children. Vehicles are scheduled based on the needs of each passenger, location, time and the use of a lift-equipped bus, van or car. Trips are scheduled in the most-efficient, cost-effective way using specific parameters that schedules multiple riders in the same vehicle at the same time.
Be independent and continue a healthy, active lifestyle. Rides available for medical appointments, shopping, enrichment and fitness classes, afternoon of playing cards or special events, going to the Novi Public Library, Meadowbrook Activity Center or Novi Civic Center.
